He has come of age as a cricketer. Craig McMillan is the most experienced batsman in the New Zealand side. With the departure of senior pros Fleming and Astle, this hard-hitting veteran has had to transform his game and take up a lot more responsibility.
There was a time in the talented 31-year old batsman’s career when bowlers would trick him into playing a false stroke on more occasions than none. McMillan is a matured individual now – he has played some match-winning knocks recently.
In the crucial match against England, McMillan came into bat to join Scott Styris with his team in a troubled state at 31-4. He didn’t refrain from playing the big strokes from the minute he arrived. The need of the hour was to consolidate but McMillan went on the attack and ensured the English bowlers lost their rhythm.
He struck four monstrous sixes in his knock of 57. Later, he took a splendid catch to dismiss England captain Paul Collingwood – also followed it up by effecting a run-out to get rid of the dangerous Darren Maddy.
